The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina opened a new Durham distribution center supported by a $1 million Food Lion FEEDS investment. The Food Bank opened the 64,000-square-foot Food Lion FEEDS Hunger Solution Center at Welcome Venture Park on Hamlin Road in Durham. Food Lion FEEDS contributed $1 million toward the project, according to the organizations' public statements at the opening.

Food Bank leaders said the new warehouse would double capacity to distribute fresh, Carolina-grown produce and protein. The Durham branch serves a six-county region where nearly 97,000 people are estimated to face food insecurity.

A partner pantry director said the Timberlake Community Center serves roughly 600 to 1,000 visitors per month as grocery costs and benefit changes affect families. An analysis cited by ABC11 estimated that SNAP participation fell in 49 states after federal eligibility changes, while about 42 million people had received benefits before those changes.

Food-bank capacity depends on cold storage, loading, transportation, volunteers and partner pantries as well as the amount of donated food. Food insecurity estimates describe uncertain or inadequate access to food and are not identical to monthly pantry visits or federal benefit enrollment.

A larger warehouse can reduce handling time and spoilage, but it cannot by itself replace household income or all lost public benefits. As of the edition cutoff, The opening-day report did not include audited throughput, operating cost or a measured post-opening reduction in unmet need. The available reports distinguish measurements and attributed claims from conclusions that had not yet been established. Where officials supplied numbers, those figures remain subject to revision as agencies reconcile records and publish later updates. Subsequent records may therefore change the totals without changing the initial chronology. The next factual records to examine are monthly distribution volume and partner-pantry demand and changes in SNAP enrollment, food prices and private donations.
