Dutch volunteers are inspecting peat dikes for cracks while record-low Rhine levels force cargo ships to carry far less freight. The same dry summer is constraining irrigation, exposing riverbeds and raising costs along inland transport routes.

Dutch water authorities deployed volunteer patrols to inspect drought-sensitive peat dikes. The Netherlands has 21 regional water organizations responsible for functions including flood control. The Rhine at Cologne fell below the previous record low set in 2018.

Some cargo vessels that normally carry 2,000 to 2,500 metric tons were limited to roughly 400 to 600 metric tons. Water restrictions affected some agricultural irrigation in the Netherlands. Authorities had not found major dike failures in the inspected area but expected monitoring to continue into autumn.

About one-third of the Netherlands is below sea level. Peat loses strength as it dries, creating a different risk from overtopping during floods. Lower cargo loads require more trips or alternative transport for the same volume.
