Northern Wake Fire Department added an underwater drone with sonar, video and autonomous grid-mapping for rescue and recovery work. The fire department says the system can map search grids and inspect submerged objects before divers enter hazardous water. Northern Wake Fire Department said the new remotely operated vehicle provides sonar and 4K video for underwater searches. Crews can program a grid so the system automatically maps a designated area and records possible targets.

Officials said sonar is essential in local low-visibility water where a conventional camera may see only inches ahead. The department expects the device to help locate submerged vehicles and victims while limiting unnecessary exposure for divers. The department is using the system as a reconnaissance layer. Operators can narrow an area, mark an object and assess conditions before committing people to a hazardous dive, while the stored mapping record can make repeat searches more systematic rather than dependent on visual sweeps.

Team members completed specialized training in Norway and said they plan to share capability with neighboring Triangle agencies. Fire officials are building maps of Falls Lake and areas with a history of drownings to improve future response. Remote sensing assists but does not replace trained divers, incident command or medical rescue procedures. Sonar returns require interpretation and can be affected by bottom terrain, vegetation, debris and water conditions.

Regional mutual aid can spread the value of specialized equipment beyond the department that purchased and trained on it.
